Having been dubbed the industry’s “Curry Oscars”, the fifteenth annual British Curry Awards took place last night to honour the UK’s finest curry establishments.

Restaurateurs, suppliers, distributors, celebrities, councillors and everyone who was anyone turned up at the Battersea Evolution in London to celebrate the country’s favourite dish.

Speaking to a packed dining hall, Just Eat UK’s Chief Executive, Andrew Kenny, revealed just how popular curry was stating: “Last year, one curry was sold every two seconds on the Just Eat platform!”

With the event being streamed live on the net, the award ceremony’s founder, Enam Ali, reminded everyone of the landmark decision made by the Government in reversing the so-called ‘Takeaway clause‘.

The editor of Spice Business magazine said: “This month, the first ‘vindaloo visa’ has been granted. This is thanks to the broad coalition of political support we have built – thank you, and let us enjoy this success tonight.”

The Best Newcomer award went to Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar’s latest venture Kanishka in London’s Mayfair, which FtLion reviwed and rated 4.5/5 earlier this year.

Speaking of his win, Atul said on Instagram: “Well done the fabulous team. I am so proud of you all! Winning this amazing accolade in less than a year is huge belief that we are on the right path. Thank you British Curry Awards for believing in us.”

Another Halal-friendly restaurant that has also been reviewed by FtLion was Kutis Brasserie in Southampton which won the award for The Best in the SouthEast.

Award-winning restaurant brand Dishoom continued their winning ways with their King’s Cross venue being recognised as the London City’s favourite.

The Shampon Group’s Bromley restaurant, which offers a fully Halal menu (excluding duck), tasted success again winning the Best London Suburbs award it won back in 2017.

The Dabbawal in Newcastle upon Tyne, which also won the Best Casual Dining award two years ago, went away with the same accolade, while The Grand Sultan, which offers a fully Halal food menu, was seen as Wales best restaurant.

A full list of 2019’s winners will soon be published on the British Curry Awards’ website.
