A brand new restaurant that specialises in North Indian cuisine with a European twist quietly opened in fashionable Maida Vale last September.
The uniquely named Dhaba@49 is situated on the corner of Elgin Avenue and Chippenham Road where “the menu is Halal, with no pork or alcohol used in food preparation”.
Although alcohol is made available, co-owners Ashish Chawla, Naveen Dogra and Sandeep Singh have ensured an extensive soft drinks and mocktail menu.
The menu is varied with an assortment of vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan dishes, with a very interesting selection from what’s called the Chaat Corner that include:
- Dhaba Mix – Peanut & crisp mix with onion, chilli & lemon.
- Bombay Bhel – A speciality of mumbai, puffed rice blended with assorted chutneys and papdi.
- Mango Chana Chaat – Milange of chick peas, red onion, tomato, green chilli, fresh lemon juice with mango twist.
- Netaji Ke Gol Gappe – Pani puri served with sweet tangy and spicy water.
The Vegetarian Starter has a street food plate from North India known as Ragra Tikki that comprises potato cutlets served with dried peas mash and chutneys, and the Pav Bhaji – a Mumbai speciality vegetables served with butter buns.
While the Non-Vegetarian Starter has Amritsari Machi which is battered fish in indian spices, it also presents a Tandoori Grill By Dhaba that has a medley of hariyali chicken, malai chicken, lamb kebab and salmon tikka!
On to the Curries then, and there’s the pair of house specialities of Dhaba Daal and Dhaba Chicken, as well as the intriguing Fish Moilee with a thick coconut sauce.
As for the Mocktails, then why not try the Ghanta Ghar Ki Shikanji – a famous, traditional drink from the streets of India made with fresh lime juice, mint sprigs, salt, sugar syrup and topped with lemonade and water.
On the first floor the restaurant has two dining areas, the larger of which houses the alcohol bar; while downstairs is a private dining area with a more opulent feel to it for 20 people.
The restaurant also meets local demand for office functions, and will shortly be publishing a new menu for the upcoming festive season.
