Masala Zone (Indian) – Earls Court

What they say:

Come for an unrivalled range of genuine delicious Indian food. Our food is totally different from local British curry houses.  Do not expect British curry house food eg no Chicken Tikka Masala here! The menus, which vary by restaurant, present a unique range of the genuine tastes of India. Spicing in the normal menu is never fiery, making most dishes palatable for workday lunches.

With branches in central London, and an attempt at fine-dining, this place seems to be targeting the posh-tosh crowd.

masala zone Bhel

Bhel – Tangy crunchy salad with puffed rice, vegetables peanuts, and chutneys

So, for the uninformed barbarians out there, you don’t eat the greens, just what’s on top.

If you like your Bombay mix, then you’d probably like this, except that it doesn’t quite have the spice of said mix. Having said that, it’s full of flavour with lots of crunch on top.

Gol Guppa Lentil and tamarind stuffed wholewheat biscuits; fill them with the spicy dressing and pop whole into the mouth warm

Gol Guppa – Lentil and tamarind stuffed wholewheat biscuits & Papadum

Regardless of the filling, the Gol Guppa is a winner – delicious!

The papadum was sprinkled with fancy toppings presumably to charge you that little extra.

Aloo Tikki

Aloo Tikki

It’s hard to find this looking so good.

But, looks aren’t everything, as they say, and this was average – lacking in spice, and pathetically small portions.

Butter Chicken

Butter Chicken

Butter chicken is a thing of subtlety and beauty.

Alas, this was extremely bland, and because it wasn’t accompanied by rice, could even pass off as a soup.

Mango Juice

Mango Juice

Pretty tasty mango juice with swirls of mango pulp.

Summary
This place doesn't quite live up to what we suspect it's trying to be. In truth, it should be called 'Masala Free-Zone'. If you're going to call yourself Masala whatever, then don't shy away from using it appropriately.

If you won't or can't, then stop trying to be something you're not (we should be charging for this advice).
