Wing Wing Krispy Chicken – Hammersmith, London
HALAL STATUS All chicken is Halal • Alcohol servedHaving opened earlier this year in Hammersmith, west London, Wing Wing is a brand that specialises in KFC (no, not Colonel Sanders’), or Korean Fried Chicken.
This 180-cover restaurant is huge, with its dessert menu, which comprises bao sandwiches filled with a variety of sweet ingredients, shakes, and slushes, strategically located on the ground floor.
With a lift installed for easy access, the rest of the menu is to be ordered downstairs, where all the seating is, including disabled toilet access and a private karaoke room for around 20.
Otherwise, the menu here is no different to its original branch in Tavistock Square.
A confidently designed interior, with a smart, industrialised look to it, essentially mirrors the confident claim declared on its website which unequivocally boasts:
You think you know fried chicken? Think again! Our krispy wings are the best you’ve ever tasted. Flipping the bird to all our competition!
While the food concept championed here is called ‘chi-maek’ – a fusion of the english word ‘chicken’ and the Korean for beer ‘maekju’ – the owners have informed FtL that “all our chicken is Halal”.
This Korean eatery can also make available unique corporate delivery services that can range from single lunchboxes to party packs, and even 100-wing trays.
DRINKS
Interesting bottles these, especially brought in from Korea, and said to be quite popular there.
Truth be told, this may take a little getting used to for some, particularly the milky and mildly sweet rice drink (if anyone can translate Korean, let us known its name in the comments below), which we actually enjoyed.
As for the Milkis, then this was a light, tangy, fizzy milk drink that was nice and refreshing.
You might want to note that with 20-30g of sugar per serving, some may find these a tad on the sweet side in more ways than one!
Admittedly, it wasn’t the warmest of evenings when we visited. Having said that though, the secret behind these finely-textured slushes is to give em enough time to melt so as to counter their strong ginger-flavoured base. Additionally, be sure to give them a good stir every so often too.
With that having been said, the ice cream in the Vanilla Ice Cream Float, once sufficiently melted, does well to neutralise the acridity of the ginger heat.
Similarly, the lime holds its own against the powerful ginger, which really does hit the back of the throat and might take some getting used to, in the Lemon Lime version.
As for the Coconut Soy, then the coconut is far too insipid to stand against said ginger. As such, we’d recommend the Lemon Lime all the way.
WINGS & DRUMSTICKS
Their signature wings and drumsticks can be ordered in three flavours: soy garlic, hot, and liquorice, or a mixture of the three, where: 6pcs £7.50, 12pcs £13.50, 18pcs £19.50, and 50pcs £50.50.
These Soya Garlic Wings had an ultra-crispy skin, which bordered on the crunchy, and brushed with enough of the soya garlic sauce to deliver some gentle heat. Quite delicious!
But as good as the above were, these Liquorice Wings were out of this world, with the mild sticky sweetness of the caramelised liquorice coming through superbly.
Again, gorgeously crispy on the outside, and thus dangerously addictive. Some of the best wings we’ve had in a very long time.
How good were these Hot Drum Sticks? Undeniably so!
And how on earth were they able to puff the skin up in the way they did to achieve that incredible crispy-cum-crunchy exterior? Answers on a postcard please. Full of flavour; extremely aromatic; moist and perfectly cooked; perfection!
CRISPY SEAFOOD
When you have soft and tender prawns and calamari that have managed to retain that familiar chewy edge, you know you’re half way there.
Add to that the lightly sauced, airy, crispy batter, and we couldn’t help but enjoy these Calamari & Prawns.
BOAS/ BURGERS/ WRAPS
To transform these into a meal, all you need do is add £2.00 for regular fries and soda.
The halloumi really was extremely well cooked, and contained in a soft brioche bun with plenty of condiments therein.
As for the star of the show, then this was perfectly done and encased in delicate crispy batter.
Alongside the halloumi there was grated carrots, thinly sliced cucumber, pickled onions, lettuce, and a layer of tangy coleslaw that brought the entire burger together into a coherent whole.
If you’ve managed this far, then you’ll probably know what’s coming!
Yup; that chicken fillet was outstandingly good, with its sweet and sticky liquorice glaze combining really nicely with the tart and zesty combo of the pickled onions and coleslaw.
It ought to be said though, that while these condiments all worked together fairly well, they were exactly the same as the above.
We would have expected Wing Wing to show a little more creativity, if we’re being honest.
This was arguably the most intriguing of the sandwiches in this section of the menu.
You won’t find too many wraps with fish and chips showcased in this way.
Before we evaluate though, the condiments in this wrap appeared to be replicated precisely as those used in the burgers above.
With that said, however, this wasn’t quite as good as the above, with the delicate nature of the fish being lost in translation among the various bold flavours therein.
What a clever little sandwich this was, with the crispy-skinned chicken nestled neatly in between a fairly robust, fried Katsu Bao, and topped with plenty of crunchy Kimchi Coleslaw (non-alcoholic and an Extra that otherwise costs £3.00).
What’s more, and unlike the burgers, this bao did its job in managing to contain all those condiments.
SIDES & EXTRAS
These rustic Seaweed Skinny Fries were as addictive as you’ll ever get with skinny fries.
The seaweed seasoning delivered on the subtle salty-herbiness; but it was the crispy texture that had us munching on this till our hearts’ content. In fact, we could have devoured a second portion!
These battered onions were equally as rustic as their skinny fry counterparts above, though more on the oily side, while being covered in a tangy-sweet drizzle.
Decent without being anything memorable.
In addition, we also tried these two crisp packets of Korean crunchy crackers.
And while both were shrimp flavoured, one was hot and the other regular. Of the two, the former was far better.
DESSERTS
As for this Yuzu Meringue, then it was the best of the lot, with the zesty lemon of the yuzu marrying well with the sweet, crunchy meringue crumbled over the outside.
With three other flavours to choose from, namely Pineapple Orange, Nutella Mars Bar, and Ice Cream Cone, we opted for the Strawberry Granola at the recommendation of the staff member.
Truth be told though, this mash-up was a simple little pot made up of thick, vanilla ice cream, but let down by the strawberry syrup.
The mixture of granola and crushed meringue sprinkled over the top would make this dessert one which, we’d imagine, would be a hit with the kids.

With that being said, however, there's no denying the quality of the wings and drumsticks here.
Whatever technique they're using to create such magical texture, is quite incredible. As such, we'd definitely recommend these as some of the best we've had in quite a while. Otherwise, the rest of the menu is good, and one that will probably appeal to a younger audience.
