British Kebab Awards 2019 – Is your fave on the list?
The 7th British Kebab Awards crowned the country’s leading kebab outlets last night at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel.
Over 1,200 guests and 110 MPs and members of the House of Lords gathered to celebrate what has now become known as the ‘Kebab Oscars’.
And the guest of honour had to have been the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who said that he, despite being a vegetarian, loved kebab shops for “what they do”.
- 1.3m kebabs sold contributing £2.8b to the British economy.
- 20,000 kebab outlets sell 2,500 tonnes of lamb & chicken doner each week.
- 200 doner kebab manufacturers see a combined turnover in excess of £750m.
While also revealing his love of falafels, Corbyn ended his speech to rousing applause with a message of unity: “There can only ever be one answer to the racists who are trying to divide us. Do not be divided. Always, always, always be totally united.”
Another fact to emerge from the awards was that 44 per cent of Labour remainer respondents had enjoyed a kebab the previous month prior as opposed to 25 per cent of Conservative respondents.
Notable Halal winners at this year’s prestigious award included Uni Kebab (rated 4/5 ROARS), who celebrated Tweeting: “Yes! We did it again! We brought the award back to Southampton! Crowned one of the best in the UK.”
Skewd Kitchen (rated 3.5/5 ROARS) in London’s Cockfosters also added to their collection of accolades with Maz Demir, Executive Chef, telling FtLion: “I am delighted to win the Fine Dining Restaurant award for Skewd at the British Kebab Awards. We had previously won the Chef of the Year twice; in 2017 and 2018.”
