How does Burger & Waffle’s chicken and waffle compare?

Sitting in the undergrowth of a street of shops in Sudbury is this slightly out of place restaurant strategically named Burger & Waffle.
You know when you want pancake, but only find waffles being served, and vice versa. well here they do both!
Due to the Americanisation of our taste buds, however, we stayed true to the name of venue and ordered chicken waffles and maple syrup.
Having recently been to TrueBurger on the infamous Ladypool Rd in Birmingham, we had a few places to compare this too, including a chicken and waffle at the impressive Stax Diner on Carnaby St, while also having had a giant version of this at the Big Pink American diner in Miami Beach.
We asked if the chicken was freshly made and happily most of their items are made fresh, rather than out of a packet.
But I did find that calling it chicken strips on top of the waffle sounded a bit meagre. What was delivered were quite chunky pieces; and though they could have been a bit more generous, one more chunky strip might give the dish that extra element it lacks.
We tried the vegetarian burger, which had portobello mushroom, halloumi and avocado – actualy quite a mishmash of ingredients. I found the burger smaller than expected, and exactly what it said on the tin. And though the halloumi stuck out adding good texture, this was otherwise an average veggie burger.
The cheesy chips on the side were nice. Yet, they came with homemade cheese sauce, as opposed to grated cheddar which I can never understand; but would have preferred them being drowned in that sauce.
The milkshakes we tried were as you tend to get anywhere nowadays, with maybe too much ice cream. But they did have a bubblegum milkshake with a doughnut and other goodies on top which I was too afraid to try.
Since having also tasted the waffle with strawberry and ice cream, it was a tasty buttery waffle, especially after soaking up some strawberry syrup and melted ice cream.
All in all, I wasn’t expecting to have my socks blown off, and Burger and Waffle delivered in that regard.
It was a good visit and definitely worth going to if your in the locality, but it won’t be a regular for me.
