Thousands of free meals have been distributed to NHS staff and the elderly across London and Essex thanks to a coordinated effort involving charities, restaurants, a satellite channel and a butcher.
Charities Support Humanity and Muntada Aid partnered with Eman Channel to deliver a thousand hot meals per day to those over-65 and workers across 13 hospitals fighting the spread of Covid-19.
With Indian sister-restaurants Saffron Street and Saffron Kitchen creating the meals and meat purveyor Gafoor Pure Halal providing supplies, 1900 food boxes were served during the first two days of the initiative which started on Monday.
Speaking of the success, satellite TV Eman Channel posted on Instagram: “It has been a pleasure to serve food to the hard working staff who are completing crazy-hours to help the masses.”
With the backing of sponsors allowing meals to be produced at a cost of just £1 each, these were delivered to areas in Barking, East Ham, Upton Park and Ilford.
The channel confirmed that it had distributed 900 food packs on Monday with more having been delivered yesterday.
Support Humanity has also launched a donation page appealing that “in order for this support to continue for people risking their lives we are in urgent need of donations”, before adding: “This is a desperate plea to seek donations (no amount is too small). Remember charity does not decrease your wealth.”
Saffron posted on Instagram: “Through the hard work of our friends at @emanchanneltv and @supportinghumanitycharity we’ve been given the fabulous platform to nourish and show our love to the mighty @nhs. We served piping hot food to an incredible 1900 heroes across day 1 & 2 of the project.”
