Tweet in support of E. London’s oldest Indian eatery goes viral

In a touching tweet on behalf of her father and grandfather, a daughter called on support for their iconic restaurant in east London during these tough times.

Mehnaz made the appeal on Wednesday on behalf of the Halal Restaurant on Mark Street in Aldgate with her post then being retweeted 12k times with over 30k likes.

“Hey twitter! Not one to do this, but my dad owns the oldest Indian restaurant in East London and has been struggling with customers so please show some love!

“If you’re in Aldgate come have a curry, I’m biased but it’s the best! Below is my grandad in the 70s vs my dad now,” Mehnaz tweeted.

In reaction to the overwhelming support, she replied: “Can’t even begin to express how grateful we are for this, but we are not just one #SupportLocalBusinesses do your part to help those who have struggled in this time!”

The tweet also attracted support from one of London’s leading Indian restaurant brands Dishoom who said: “An East London institution! I have hazy recollections of this place…”

The Halal Restaurant was established in 1939 before Mehnaz’s granndfather Usman Narangali came to work their in 1969, according to an article published on Spitalfields Life blog.

Eventually, after buying the restaurant from the previous owner, it was taken over by her father Mahaboob Narangali in 1988 who has been running it since.

In this current clime, Mehnaz reassured: “We have put social distancing measures in place, to keep you safe in this pandemic!”

While the Halal Restaurant is part of the ‘Eat Out To Help Out‘ governemnt scheme with 50% off every Mon-Wed until 31st August, orders can also be placed via UberEats, Ritual and JustEat.
