National & International Coffee Day (29 Sept – 1 Oct)
National and International Coffee Day is as much about the celebration of life’s achievements and our collective history as it is about one of our favourite beverages.
Coffee is such a natural part of our daily routines that we seldom stop to think about how our social affairs revolve around this universal drink. Coffee is consumed right around the clock the world over. It is consumed to help rid us of those morning cobwebs, and used (some might say abused) to keep us going through the night to meet those important deadlines. We offer coffee to friends and family, business associates, and any other excuse we might need. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to, therefore, say that the power of coffee seems to keep the world going.
Just have a look at the number of coffee chains dominating our high streets today and you’ll get a feel of how truly in love we are with it. What’s more, the variety of coffees out there is staggering! You have your Turkish coffee, cold brew, vacuum coffee, espresso with milk, coffee with milk, coffee or espresso with whipped cream, flavoured types, iced, instant, canned, decaffeinated, and God knows how many others. Further still, each of these varieties differ according to the origin of the coffee bean, as well as the country its being serving in. It seems like coffee innovation is restricted only by the extent of our imagination.
- Coffee is one of the world’s biggest crops.
- Coffee is the most popular drink worldwide with over 400 billion cups consumed each year.
- Markets in US, Europe and Japan account for over 50% of world coffee consumption.
- The UK coffee-shop market was estimated to have turned over £6.2 billion in 2013.
- Britain consumes 500g of coffee per person, per year.
And we haven’t even touched on its origin and history. International and National Coffee Day are a celebration not just of the present, but also this bean’s long and fascinating past. While the common story has it that a goat herder from the 9th century discovered the beans stimulating effects after his goats began acting a little strange after its consumption, the beans actual origin is thought to have been made in Ethiopia.
But its popularity only really took off after being adopted by the Arabs circa 15th century. Such was its impact that not only did coffee houses spring up on practically every corner of every city across the Arab world, but it became such important centres of social interaction that even political intrigues and coup de tats are said to have been planned around the coffee table.
Not too long thereafter, it found its way across Asia before eventually being introduced to the Europeans, who took transported it over to the Americas.
And here we are celebrating its evolution and all that it has stood for. While its National Coffee Day today for both England and Scotland, and another 19 other countries across the world, International Coffee Day will be on the 1st of October this Saturday.
As you inhale the aromas of this universal beverage and bring that dark, comforting liquid to your lips, just remember all that coffee day encompasses.
