Burmese Lahpet to cater for Halal in Covent Garden
HALAL STATUS Halal chicken (prepped & cooked separately) • Alcohol & pork servedWhile there aren’t many Burmese restaurants that cater for Halal, Lahpet aren’t just preparing to open a new site in London, but also say that “our chicken is Halal”.
More importantly, they have confirmed that their kitchen has “procedures in place… to make certain that the Halal chicken dishes are prepped and cooked in a way as to avoid any cross-contamination with the pork” on the menu.
Having started out as a stall on Maltby Street, Lahpet will be opening their second in the heart of Covent Garden, and the new shopping and dining destination The Yards, sometime very soon.
With their first restaurant having opened on Bethnal Green Road in 2018, and which reopened last week for terrace dining, they offer a modern take on “authentic Burmese cooking”.
Although the Coconut [egg] Noodles with Chicken is the only dedicated chicken dish, there are plenty of veggie and fish-based dishes as part of a succinct menu.
This includes Mohinga Catfish and lemongrass chowder; Hake Masala with lemongrass and cassava rosti; and Fried Bream, as well as Lentil Chow Chow; and the Lahpet Thohk tea leaf salad.
With lockdown still in force, Lahpet are delivering noodle- and salad-making kits, with products “not widely available outside of Myanmar”, that include said chicken Coconut Noodles.
