Hanwell’s only fully Halal Café Mama & Me
HALAL STATUS Fully HalalIf there’s one thing that Hanwell in west London is historically known for, it has to be its community centre located at the heart of the district.
As a Victorian Grade II Listed building, Hanwell Community Centre first opened in 1857 as the Cuckoo Schools for pauper children from inner London, with its famous tower clock, which even today chimes on the hour till the late evening, being inserted in 1879.
But of all the pupils who attended there from 1857 until a little before the Second World War, Charlie Chaplin, comic actor and filmmaker of the silent film era, has to be the most famous.
With the place having been through a number face lifts over the past 160 years, the Centre is as active today as it’s ever been, with arts and crafts studios, sports and educational facilities, offices, and a popular place for the local home-schooling community.
Despite its popularity though, if there was one aspect that continued to remain neglected, it had to have been the cafetaria located in the reception lounge; that was, until April of last year when a local family managed to turn things around and open Café Mama & Me (aka With Love From Mama & Me).
With an emphasis on freshly made products and having acquired a perfect Food Hygiene Rating of 5, the café offers a fully Halal menu, with plenty of variety including the exotic flavours of Central Asia.
And while there’s a range of hot beverages available, there’s also milkshakes and smoothies for kids, as well as what the cafe calls its Speciality Drinks, which range from Tumeric Latte to Desi and Kashmiri Chai.
The bakery section has freshly made pastries, sandwiches and desserts, such as waffles and ice cream, alongside some attractive cupcakes, muffins and scrumptious brownies baked by the family’s oldest 16-year-old daughter Iman.
More impresstively, not only does Café Mama & Me serve things like hot soups, but it manages to keep things exciting too by offering regular dishes-of-the-day throughout the week.
What’s more, things like a Desi Afternoon Tea, comprising of a tasty assortment of fresh sandwiches, cakes, Asian savouries and a selection of teas and coffees, can also be arranged.
In addition, they also offer the following packages at extremely reasonable prices:
- Party Packages – basic package for £120 for a 2hr venue, that includes cold/hot food for 10 children.
- Workshops – run during school holidays and weekends, for example: Cupcake Decorating, Cake Pops, Fondant Fun, Slime Making.
- Made-to-order Cakes – celebratory buttercream cakes, including wedding cakes. Basic starting price: 6″ £28.00; 8″ £38.00; 10″ £64.00; 12″ £92.00. This includes the option of hiring out a 24″ light-up wedding cake stand for £30.00 (plus £50.00 deposit).
With absolutely no other cafés in Hanwell providing an authentic, fully Halal menu lovingly conceived and presented by a passionate local family, Café Mama & Me ought to be your first, second and third option when looking for a freshly made breakfast, brunch or lunch.
