Having launched just six months ago in the historical city of Cambridge, Golpo is on a mission to champion Bangladeshi cuisine.
The four owners behind this venture are looking to shake up the UK’s south Asian restaurant scene with a modern take on authentic Bengali food.
The very brand name Golpo, which means story or chit-chat, points to the casual-dining vibe guests can experience at this 80-cover venue, with extra seating available outdoors.
The restaurant is ideally placed, with the city’s main railway station around the corner, the town centre just down the road, and the eco-friendly Cambridge Central Mosque only a 10 minutes’ drive away.
With 60 years of combined experience shared by the owners in this industry, Golpo’s menu reflects a mature take on Bengali cuisine which you simply will not find elsewhere.
As part of their endeavour to offer diners a fully Halal experience, the restaurant has developed a complementary drinks menu as part of its dry bar, which was curated and designed by the owner of the Halal drinks company Azanti.
As a testimony of how far this establishment has come in such short time, only last month, Golpo hosted the President of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, and his entourage, who, says co-owner Ziaur Choudhrey, were left thoroughly impressed.
In fact, Ziaur, who also runs well-known Indian restaurant Montaz in Newmarket, has successfully published a recipe book called Going for an Indian.
With a foreword from none other than two Michelin-star Chef Daniel Clifford, Ziaur passionately captures his generation’s struggles as an ethnic minority group growing up in the UK.
Golpo brings Cambridge a true modern take on Bengali cuisine
Golpo offers a refined menu that succeeds in bringing to the fore the dynamic complexity of Bangladeshi cuisine, as well as a drinks menu that is sure to excite.
There are very few fully Halal restaurants in the UK that will be able to pull-off a selection of beverages as sophisticated and mature as Golpo’s.
From the sweet and sour interplay of the Amaretto Sour, and the sharp kick delivered by the Bee’s Knees, to the superbly-balanced Coconut & Raspberry Fizz, these will knock you off your perch.
While Golpo offers affordable lunch time and takeaway menus, its the a la carte menu that will set pulses racing, with a variety of small plates to set the tone.
With the potato-based fritters of the Dal Bora Chaat being the perfect appetiser to start proceedings, diners will want to put in an order for the Kolkata Spice Garlic & Chilli Chicken, whose spicious heat and tender chunks of poultry will amaze.
The contrast of textures in the Market ‘Nimki’ Chana Chaat isn’t the only reason you need to give this a go, but also because this will tantalise your taste buds with its many flavour profiles.
There’s a reason why Golpo’s Muglai Premium Lamb Chops are such a popular sell, seared and scented as they are with the unique and aromatic spice known as Stone Flower, and coming in a portion of either four (£12.50) or eight (£23.50).
But their Biryani Dish of the Day has to be the spectacular Tawa Murgh Biryani, which is as aromatic, moist, and addictive as any you’re likely to encounter.
With half-a-dozen Big Plates on the menu, two of their most popular are in fact non-meat dishes, starting with Hyderabadi-style stir-fried Begum’s ‘Choti’ Aubergines Masala, which has a baby aubergine resting in a flavourous tomato and onion based masala spice.
Another one to consider is their ‘Bhapa’ Bengali Spiced Tiger Prawns in a Kasundi & Coconut Sauce, with succulent prawns based in a subtly spicy marination, before being exquisitely cooked to a tender finish in the tandoor, and served with coconut and lime sauce.
If you’re visiting as a couple, then why not go for an all-round experience at Golpo and their show-stopping platter for just £29.
Bringing together marinated chunks of beef, with chicken wings, a portion of masala fries, schezwan fried rice, punchy paneer achari tikka, naan, and a bowl of lentil banjara, this is value for money at just £15 per head.
There’s plenty for the vegetarians too with regional curries that are highlighted by the Dum Aloo Posto and the Lauki Chana, which both cost only £7.50 each.
Their desserts don’t pale in comparison either, with a menu that showcases what this restaurant has achieved; that careful balance between the modern and the traditional.
With a dedicated patissier, you can’t go wrong with either the decadent Floating Malai Tiramisu, which you won’t find elsewhere; or their Carrot Halwa & Cheesecake, that’s topped with a carom seed crumble.
It isn’t by chance, therefore, that within less than a year, Golpo boasts 650 five-out-of-five reviews on Tripadvisor, and is currently ranked third out of 367 restaurants in Cambridge.
And with knowledgeable staff, chefs that can accommodate for specific diets, and years of experience in the industry, they not only offer professional catering services, but are offering FtLion readers an exclusive 30% off for dine-in only (quote ‘Feed the Lion’ before ordering).
