The Joburger brings S. African food to London’s Tooting Market
HALAL STATUS Fully HalalA street food vendor whose menu is inspired by South Africa’s “unofficial” capital city Johannesburg has launched its second store in London.
The Joburger, which is named after the well-known abbreviation ‘Joburg’ as it’s known by Johannesburg’s locals, has opened in the yard market area of Tooting Market.
Its fully Halal menu sells a staple diet amongst Joburg’s locals of toasted sandwiches, burgers, pies and subs, all of which are “woven into the very fabric of the community”.
Owner Shoobs told the Tooting Newsie: “I really miss the food from back home in Johannesburg, so I brought it to London. I opened a shop in Woolwich six months ago, which has a regular stream if customers – including lots of South Africans of course – so I thought I’d open a second branch in the culinary wonderland of Tooting.”
With a site also in Woolwich Market, The Joburger prepares fresh food daily and says: “We source all our meat from specially curated butchers and ensure all our meat, our ingredients and our preparation methods are completely halal.”
