Le Bab will be taking over the “site of the legendary Turkish Delight on Old Street” in London’s Hackney with the potential return of an award-winning dish.
Co-founder Stephen Tozer has informed FtLion that not only will Le Bab continue to cater for Halal here, but will be “ready to roll by the end of February”.
Stephen’s second kebab brand Maison Bab in Covent Garden was named #FtLionAwards restaurant of the year last Friday after becoming only the fourth restaurant to be rated a perfect 5/5 during its review in October.
During the month-long awards competition, Maison Bab’s limited edition The Big Zuu Kebab – inspired by Muslim grime artist Big Zuu – was also voted Best Main 2020.
The kebab has proved so popular in fact that Stephen further revealed: “We have some cool new stuff inbound [for Le Bab] like Big Zuu Round Two!”
Le Bab announced on their Instagram: “We get locked down, but we’ll kebab again. We’re so excited about our latest adventure, as we bring a brand new, very naughty kebab shop to the site of the legendary Turkish Delight on Old Street.”
While this latest venture was looking to remain open into the small hours with a 5am closing time, the country has now gone into full lockdown.
When the 20-cover restaurant does open, it will feature a “striking interior design created by Angus Buchanan”, a pink floor-to-ceiling velvet curtain with plenty of stainless steel surrounds and neon lights.
Their menu will again be overseen by executive chef Manu Canales, who collaborated with Big Zuu to produce his award-winning kebab, as well as dishes comprising of ‘fusion’ kebabs and mezzes.
These will include a lamb Madras adana kebab inspired by Indian flavours, and a vegetarian paneer kebab featuring ‘signature spiced’ paneer.
As with all his previous restaurants, Stephen confirmed that their Halal lamb and chicken will again be prepped and cooked with strict procedures and practices in place, including a dedicated storage space, work station, utensils, and a grill, to avoid cross-contamination.
