Halal at Market Hall West End – UK’s largest food hall
While the good news is that the UK’S largest food hall will be launching this Friday 15th November, two of the 11 food traders there are fully Halal.
Spread across three huge floors and 35,000 sq ft, the Market Hall West End takes over the old BHS building just off Oxford Street and will be opening at 11am.
Although there will be other vendors offering vegan items, currently Gopal’s Corner, who will be serving a Malaysian Tamil menu, and Good Bird, who specialise in rotisserie chicken, are entirely Halal.
That’s great news because the man behind the former, Sugen Gopal, is also behind celebrated restaurant Roti King – a place acknowledged by Time Out, The Guardian and Eater as being one of London’s “greatest cheap eats”.
And with their famous flaky, buttery rotis being served alongside items exclusive to Market Hall West End, such as a selection of satay based dishes, Gopal’s Corner appears to be worth the visit alone.
Good Bird are known for their “low & slow cooked rotisserie chicken” alongside wings, burgers and naans, and have informed us: “Yes, we are 100 per cent Halal.”
Paradise Slice Pizza Shop serve New York-style pizzas and have confirmed with us that they’re “gonna be using certified Halal chicken breast on a spicy Buffalo Chicken Pizza”.
They’ve also clarified: “We do have pork pepperoni in our kitchen, but we have three decks on the main oven to keep everything separate; and will be reheating in a designated area with a designated peel.
“Chefs also always handle chicken with blue vinyl gloves and the food handling chefs are also located right by the kitchen’s handwash sink and are trained to wash hands between various food items which would be considered cross-contamination.”
As meticulous as that is, Paradise Slice Pizza Shop further added: “We use separate colour coordinated cutters to make sure there’s no cross-contamination between Halal and non-Halal meats.”
Although we haven’t been able to determine whether alcohol will being used as an ingredient by the following vendors, there are others offering vegan and veggie options, including the all-vegan restaurant CookDaily which brings “a varied menu that’s inspired by a fusion of cuisines and culinary techniques”.
Another includes Fanny’s Kebabs whose short menu includes the option of a Vegan Falafel or a Halloumi & Aubergine wrap, salad box or rice box.
With over 900 covers, this food hall has three dedicated events spaces, a roof terrace and a first-of-its-kind internet TV studio, including a demo kitchen.
With Market Hall Victoria and Fulham Halls already well established, this venue is the third and also the third super food court to open this year behind the Arcade Food Theatre and Kerb’s Seven Dials Market – the latter having a number of Halal-friendly traders.
