Kingston upon Thames only fully Halal Malay spot
As part of a vibrant community comprising of hundreds of stores and independent shops in Kingston, Onde Onde boasts a menu that makes it a genuine cafe spot.
Its lunch menu offers plenty of variety with hot drinks ranging from both traditional Malay to contemporary coffees, as well as freshly-made sandwiches, cakes and more.
But it’s their a la carte where they really shine, with starters that comprise of your classic Malay appetisers like the Satay Bakar where succulent pieces of marinated chicken-on-a-stick go perfectly with a peanut sauce.
In addition to their delicate chicken or vegetable pastry puffs, Onde Onde’s Roti Canai is an absolute must with a pair of crispy-cum-crumbly roti paired with a rich and gently spiced chicken or lamb curry.
Moving onto Onde Onde’s main dishes, then there’s a reason why their fish dish, the Masak Ikan Kakap Tiga Rasa, is one of their signatures.
This vivid-looking plate presents a whole sea bream that’s based in a finger-licking sauce that perfectly balances the hot, the sweet and the sour, before being fried to a crispy finish.
If you’re looking for the more traditional staples though, then it has to be, of course, the Nasi Lemak, which is presented with fragantly steamed coconut rice and sundries.
This can also be upgraded with half-a-dozen options that range from chicken or lamb curry, and chicken or beef rendang, to spiced fried chicken, and prawn sambal.
Otherwise, their selection of noodles is where Onde Onde really stands out, including the Mee Goreng Mamak, which has fresh egg noodles stir fried with a delightful combination of chicken and prawns, choi sum, tofu and vegetables.
Paired with a mild chilli peanut sauce, the depth of flavour in this dish courtesy of the ‘wok hei’ is something to behold.
If you’re after pure luxury in a bowl, then the Mee Kari Laksa soup, with egg noodles immersed in an addictively good curry and coconut gravy, has to be tried to be believed.
With chicken, prawns, tofu, choi sum, carrot strips, bean sprouts, fish balls, and a boiled egg, this will have you going right until the final slurp.
Just don’t forget to try their decadently sweet and texturally-layered Malay Cendol milkshake, before finishing your experience at Onde Onde with a strong hot beverage and their inhouse dessert combo.
Either way, this restaurant has more than enough variety to have you visiting Kingston upon Thames time and time again.
