Canadian Tim Hortons with Halal options debuts in Belfast

Canadian fast food chain Tim Hortons has today opened a spacious drive-thru – the franchise’s 37th overall – in Northern Ireland.

As with all their branches, this latest one in Belfast’s Balmoral Plaza Retail Park on Boucher Road will also be catering for Halal options, FtLion has been told.

With an opening day offer that saw the first 100 customers receive freebies, a Tim Hortons’ spokesperson informed FtLion that they introduced a pair of Halal items to their menu in 2019.

The brand also recently introduced a new Halal Turkey Hot Dog, though with the proviso that the ketchup be substituted for the Maple & Chorizo Sauce.

“Our Turkey Hot Dog is Halal approved. Please note that if you are purchasing our new Tims Turkey Hot Dog, please ensure you order with tomato ketchup and not the maple & chorizo ketchup which is sold as standard.

“The Chicken and Turkey Hot Dogs are baked in our restaurants on separate trays, therefore there is segregation of the Halal-certified products throughout the process,” the representative said.

Trio of Halal items are currently available…

The other two items include the Tims Crispy Chicken and the Tims Chicken Tenders which are “sourced from suppliers whose products are certified as Halal by religious authorities” and the “chicken is baked in our restaurants on separate trays. Therefore there is segregation of the Halal certified chicken throughout the process”.

Tim Hortons clarified: “We don’t promote our restaurants or meat as Halal approved. However, our Tims Crispy Chicken and Tims Chicken Tenders are sourced from suppliers whose products are certified as Halal by religious authorities.”

The business also explained that while “the rest of our meat is purchased from EU countries and is not Halal…. The chicken is baked in our restaurants on separate trays. Therefore there is segregation of the Halal certified chicken throughout the process”.

Made with a toasted brioche bun, the sandwich is filled with crispy chicken, green leaf lettuce, sliced tomato, smokey tomato sauce and mayonnaise, while the tenders are served with a dip of choice.
